The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a narrow and crucial waterway located between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 12% of all global trade passes through this strategic point every year, as it serves as the main gateway connecting the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. Because so much international commerce relies on this passage, any security threat or disruption in the area immediately impacts the global economy.
The main source of instability in the region is the Houthis, an armed group that controls large parts of Yemen and receives support from Iran. Their rise to power triggered an ongoing conflict that has lasted for years. Recently, the Houthis have escalated tensions by attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea and launching missiles and drones toward Saudi Arabia, creating severe instability across the Middle East.
These repeated attacks on maritime navigation have forced major shipping companies to redirect their vessels away from the Red Sea. Instead, ships must now take a much longer and far more expensive route around the southern tip of Africa. Consequently, global transportation costs have increased significantly, leading directly to higher prices for everyday consumer goods in retail stores worldwide.
In addition to trade disruptions, regional air and sea travel have become longer, more costly, and far more dangerous. However, the most devastating consequence of the conflict is the humanitarian crisis inside Yemen. Years of continuous fighting and economic disruption have left millions of Yemeni children suffering from severe hunger, malnutrition, and acute shortages of essential supplies.
Facing this worsening crisis, the United Nations Security Council has condemned the attacks, demanding an immediate end to military escalation and stronger protection for international shipping lanes. While there are constant diplomatic calls for a peaceful resolution, achieving a lasting agreement remains extremely complex, largely due to ongoing Iranian support for the Houthi movement.
